How to read the Fear & Greed Index

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index (by Alternative.me) scores overall market sentiment on a scale of 0–100. It is calculated daily from five inputs: price volatility, market momentum, social media activity, Bitcoin dominance, and Google Trends data.

  • 0 – 25 — Extreme Fear — Historically this range has been one of Bitcoin's more attractive long-term accumulation zones. Sentiment is deeply negative, many investors are selling into weakness, and contrarian buyers often become more active. It does not guarantee a bottom, but it can signal improved long-term risk/reward.
  • 25 – 45 — Fear — Market caution is widespread. Sentiment is bearish, prices are commonly below recent highs, and long-term investors often continue steady accumulation. Modest additions may be reasonable, but the signal is less compelling than Extreme Fear.
  • 45 – 55 — Neutral — Market emotion is balanced, with no clear signal in either direction. Long-term investors often keep their regular DCA strategy unchanged, as this zone is usually neither a compelling accumulation signal nor a reason to pull back.
  • 55 – 75 — Greed — Optimism is building and market confidence is rising. Prices may be running ahead of fundamentals, and new allocation has historically offered less attractive risk/reward than during fear-driven periods. Long-term investors may consider slowing the pace of new buying rather than adding aggressively.
  • 75 – 100 — Extreme Greed — Speculation is elevated and market confidence may be stretched. Historically, many major Bitcoin corrections have followed periods of extreme greed, though the signal does not identify the exact top. Long-term investors often avoid lump-sum additions here and check whether their exit or risk-management plan is in place.

As Warren Buffett observed: "Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful." Use the index as a sentiment gauge, not a precise timing tool. Cross-reference with on-chain indicators like the Mayer Multiple and AHR999 for a fuller picture.
