Quick answer

The Fear & Greed Index scores overall Bitcoin market sentiment from 0 (Extreme Fear) to 100 (Extreme Greed), built daily from five inputs: price volatility, market momentum, social media activity, Bitcoin dominance, and Google Trends data. Extreme fear has historically marked more attractive long-term entry points than extreme greed.

What Is the Fear & Greed Index?

Unlike valuation indicators such as MVRV or AHR999, the Fear & Greed Index doesn't measure whether Bitcoin is cheap or expensive at all — it measures how emotional the market currently is. It's built on the well-documented tendency for markets to overreact in both directions: panic selling during downturns, and euphoric buying during rallies.

The index is published daily by Alternative.me and has become one of the most widely referenced sentiment gauges in crypto, largely because it condenses several noisy, hard-to-quantify signals into one simple number.

How It's Calculated

The index blends five separate inputs into a single 0–100 score:

  • Volatility — current volatility and maximum drawdowns compared to recent averages. Sharp, unusual price swings push the index toward fear.
  • Market momentum / volume — current volume and momentum compared to recent averages. Strong, sustained buying pressure pushes toward greed.
  • Social media activity — the rate and tone of Bitcoin-related posts and engagement, particularly sudden spikes in interest.
  • Bitcoin dominance — Bitcoin's share of total crypto market cap. Rising dominance can reflect a flight to safety within crypto (fear); falling dominance can reflect risk-seeking into altcoins (greed).
  • Google Trends data — search volume for Bitcoin-related terms, including spikes in searches that suggest speculative interest.

Each input is weighted and combined into the final score, which updates once per day.

Reading the Zones

Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index chart with BTC price overlaid, spanning 2021 through early 2023, colored by zone — dark green in extreme fear, teal in fear, yellow in neutral, orange in greed, red in extreme greed.
Fear & Greed Index (with BTC price overlaid) through the 2021 top and 2022 bear market. Snapshot — see the live, interactive chart on the Fear & Greed indicator page.
Reading the snapshot above: The Fear & Greed Index spiked into Extreme Greed multiple times during the 2021 bull run, reaching as high as the high-80s. It crashed into Extreme Fear territory during the November 2022 FTX collapse, falling to single digits — one of the most fearful readings the index has ever recorded.
Score What tends to be happening
0 – 25
Extreme Fear
The crowd is capitulating — selling into weakness, headlines are grim, and social chatter has turned hostile. This is the zone the index is really built for: it's flagged some of Bitcoin's better long-term entry windows, though never with certainty.
25 – 45
Fear
Caution without panic. Price is usually off its recent highs and sentiment leans bearish, but nowhere near the capitulation seen in Extreme Fear — a weaker version of the same signal.
45 – 55
Neutral
No real edge either way. The market isn't telling you anything a contrarian could act on here.
55 – 75
Greed
Confidence is climbing and price often starts outrunning the underlying fundamentals. New buying here has historically carried a weaker risk/reward than buying during Fear.
75 – 100
Extreme Greed
The mirror image of Extreme Fear. Speculation is running hot, and a large share of Bitcoin's major corrections have started from somewhere in this zone — though the index can't tell you exactly when the top arrives.

Why Sentiment Matters

As Warren Buffett observed: "Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful." The Fear & Greed Index gives that idea a concrete, daily number instead of a vague feeling. Because markets are made of people, and people are prone to herding, sentiment extremes have historically clustered near price extremes too — not perfectly, but often enough to be useful as a contrarian cross-check.

Its biggest practical advantage is speed: unlike on-chain valuation metrics that reflect months of accumulated market behavior, sentiment can shift within days, making it a useful short-term temperature check alongside slower-moving indicators.

Limitations

It moves fast — sometimes too fast. A single extreme reading during a brief news-driven panic or rally means less than a sustained reading held across days or weeks. Look at the trend, not just today's snapshot.

It's sentiment, not valuation. The index says nothing about whether Bitcoin is objectively cheap or expensive — it can sit in "Fear" while price is still historically elevated, or in "Greed" during a genuine long-term accumulation zone. Pair it with a valuation indicator like MVRV or AHR999 for the fuller picture.

Extreme readings can persist. Extreme Fear can stay extreme for weeks during a genuine bear market, and Extreme Greed can persist for months during a strong bull run. The index identifies conditions, not exact turning points.

How to Use It

The Fear & Greed Index works best as a contrarian overlay on top of a steady long-term strategy, not as a standalone timing tool. A sustained run of Extreme Fear readings is a reasonable cue to stick with — or slightly lean into — a regular DCA plan rather than pulling back out of fear yourself. A sustained run of Extreme Greed is a reasonable cue to avoid lump-sum additions and to double-check that any risk-management or profit-taking plan is actually in place.

It pairs well with the Mayer Multiple and AHR999 for a valuation cross-check, or with our Cycle Compass, which weighs it alongside 20 other indicators into a single composite score.
