Quick answer

The Puell Multiple divides the daily USD value of newly issued Bitcoin by its 365-day average. Low readings signal miner revenue stress, historically clustering near bear-market bottoms. High readings signal miner windfall, historically clustering near overheated market tops.

What Is the Puell Multiple?

The Puell Multiple is named after Bitcoin analyst David Puell, who introduced it as a way to look at Bitcoin's market cycle from the supply side rather than the usual demand-side angle. Instead of asking whether holders are in profit or whether price looks stretched, it asks a different question entirely: are Bitcoin miners — the entities that actually create new supply — currently under financial stress, or earning an unusually large windfall?

Why Miner Economics Matter

Bitcoin miners have real-world costs — electricity, hardware, facility overhead — and their primary revenue is the new Bitcoin they earn for securing the network (plus transaction fees). Unlike most holders, miners are structurally motivated to sell a meaningful share of what they earn, simply to cover those ongoing costs. That makes miner revenue a genuinely different lens on market pressure than anything based on holder sentiment or valuation.

When miner revenue in USD terms is unusually high, miners are earning far more than their operating costs — reducing the pressure to sell, and often coinciding with broader market euphoria that pushes price (and therefore miner revenue) to extremes. When miner revenue is unusually low, some miners may be operating at a loss, which has historically forced weaker or less efficient operations to sell more of their holdings, or shut down entirely — both of which have coincided with capitulation-style bear-market bottoms.

The Formula

The Puell Multiple is calculated as:

Puell Multiple = Daily Issuance Value (USD) ÷ 365-Day Average of Daily Issuance Value

"Daily issuance value" is simply the number of new coins mined that day, multiplied by that day's price. Dividing by its own 365-day average measures how far today's miner revenue has strayed from its own trailing-year norm — a self-referencing comparison that adjusts automatically as Bitcoin's price level changes over time.

Reading the Zones

Puell Multiple Zone Historical Interpretation
Below 0.5 Deep Value Miner revenue under half its yearly average — historically aligned with late bear-market stress
0.5 – 2.0 Fair Value Within broad historical range, no clear extreme
2.0 – 4.0 Elevated Revenue significantly above average — often appears in stronger bull phases
Above 4.0 High Risk Extreme miner windfall — historically near overheated market phases

Reading the snapshot above: In early 2021, the Puell Multiple spiked to nearly 4 — right at the edge of High Risk territory, as miner revenue surged alongside price. It fell into Deep Value territory during the depths of the 2022 bear market, when miner revenue was running at less than half its yearly average.

Why It Tends to Work

The logic behind the Puell Multiple's historical usefulness is straightforward and grounded in real economic incentives, not just pattern-matching: miners have genuine costs and genuine need to periodically sell, which makes their revenue swings a real, structural force on supply — not just a coincidental correlation. Because mining is a competitive, low-margin business, revenue at multiples of the yearly average or fractions of it represent real, meaningful shifts in the economics of running that business, which naturally influences the pace at which mined coins hit the market.

Limitations

Mining efficiency changes over time. Hardware efficiency and electricity costs evolve, meaning the same Puell Multiple reading doesn't necessarily represent identical real-world miner conditions across different eras.

It's a supply-side signal only. It says nothing directly about demand, holder sentiment, or valuation — which is exactly why it's most useful in combination with indicators that do cover those angles, rather than on its own.

It's a zone indicator, not a timing trigger. Like most indicators on this list, extreme readings can persist for weeks or months before price actually reverses — treat it as identifying a historically favourable or unfavourable zone, not a precise entry or exit signal.

How to Use It

The Puell Multiple is most useful as a cross-check against demand-side indicators rather than a standalone signal. When it's deep in Deep Value territory at the same time valuation indicators like MVRV or AHR999 are also flashing cheap, that agreement across supply-side and demand-side data is a considerably stronger signal than either indicator alone. The same logic applies at the other extreme — miner windfall combined with elevated valuation and sentiment readings is a more meaningful warning than any single metric.

It's also one of the 21 inputs to our Cycle Compass composite score.
